Happy Birthday Jennie

It's that time of year again! When Jennifer tries to convince me that she's a year older, I don't believe her, but celebrate anyway. Today we went to a local water park and had a good time. She managed to beat me in every slide race - she was like a little Jennie Phelps out there, it was quite impressive. She managed to score tickets to the Alma Awards Show, so she's spending her evening hanging out with Eva Longoria and the likes. Be sure to look for her on TV when it airs in September.

Happy birthday Jennifer, and here's to many more! Te amo loco.

Earthquake

We just had an earthquake out here. I'm okay, and I just got word from Jennifer that she's okay too. We can't call each other because the phones are down, but email is coming through in the clutch! I'm interested to hear her side of the story because she was much closer to the epicenter than I was: according to CNN, she was only about 5 miles away!

This was my first earthquake ("feel-able" earthquake anyway); it was actually kind of scary. It's not uncommon for buildings to shake when big trucks go by, this kind of shaking was a little different. I was on the second floor of my building and when things started moving, I had a pretty uneasy feeling of not knowing what to expect. I can't imagine what those Chinese people went through.

Anyway, all is well here. Hopefully the aftershocks don't hurt too much.

Once was lost...

To my amazement, I came home last night and there it was: Jennifer's suitcase. You remember, the one that got lost on our Fourth of July trip return… two weeks ago! We both so thought that thing was gone. We even went back to Ontario airport last weekend to give it a double check (if DFW wasn't so far away, we would have gone there too).

In the interim, Jennifer had been applying for compensation. We managed to find receipts for most of the stuff in the bag, and even the bag itself. When we added it all up it was pretty astounding; lets just say it was well above what American would have given us. Two juicy tidbits amongst the missing: Jennifer's nüvi, and both of our golf shoes. Finding meaning within life, a life with neither direction nor golf'ability, has been difficult. But alas, order has been restored.

I know what you're asking, and no, I didn't check the contents. Because the bag appeared to me like a present from Santa, I'm leaving that adventure for Jennifer.

Family Fun on the Fourth

Last weekend was spent seeing a bunch of family (all on my side). We first saw my dads side in Indiana at their annual homecoming. Not only is it a chance to get together and catch-up, but a few of band together and play golf. Although I've played in the outing several times, this year was special because Jennifer joined me - and did a heck of a job! The tournament is a four-man scramble, so every player has a chance to contribute, and on several occasions Jennifer did just that. I can honestly say our score would have been a few strokes higher had it not been for her; pretty impressive for a "beginner."

After the reunion we headed down to Kentucky to see some of my moms family. In the course of two days we managed to see just about everyone (she has six brothers and sisters) spread over two cities! Lets just say sleeping wasn't in the cards. My uncle Harold came through yet again with the barbecue. Not only did we have some of the Fourth of July leftovers on Sunday, he turned around and made a fresh batch on Monday. It was truly impressive.

Traveling on/around the fourth is always an adventure. Many of my worst flying experiences have come this time of year. Heading out everything went smoothly, but coming back was another story. It started when our flight was delayed, which was fine because it gave me a chance to finish a book I've been trying to finish for over a year. When we finally did board, however, it seemed as if every baby in Los Angeles was flying with us; not cool at 11:00 at night. Making matters worse, upon arrival Jennifer's bag was lost. To top it off, when we got home we were locked out of our garage. I didn't hit the sack until 3! It's all good though - we had fun.
